I don't think there's any question "Dressed to Kill" is inspired by Italian giallos. And while I won't argue it may in fact be De Palma's worst movie, I actually found it fun (although I haven't seen it since 1980, and imagine its sexual politics--especially the transvestite stuff--have aged poorly), but there's also no question that "Dressed to Kill" is pretentious trash. However, to be fair, it's horny, stylish trash, and being a teen at the time, I responded to the way De Palma imposed his adolescent fantasies and fetishes on the material. I couldn't say if he ever saw this movie, but "Strip Nude for Your Killer" has a grungy, sleazy atmosphere far removed from De Palma's cool, sleek visuals, and a dyspeptic view of humanity (take a look at what we get for a hero in this thing--an abusive, immature, sexist asshole who does the bare minimum to qualify for the title) that didn't go over as well with Americans--even in t he cynical Seventies--as it did with jaded Europeans. I suspect De Palma, who wasn't exactly discreet about his influences, probably thought he was making a movie in the vein of Maria Bava's "Blood & Black Lace" or Argento's "Deep Red."
And I'm happy to make the sacrifice, although it leaves me with the unsettling suspicion that my life has become an eternal struggle between the Shell Answer Man and Rule 34.
Thanks, Cheryl. I wouldn't recommend this film to most people, but you have a solid bad moving-watching pedigree, so I say go for it. I'm told it's available to rent for $1.99 on Amazon Prime.
OK, Scott, the question has to be asked:
Was this the inspiration for arguably Brian De Palma's worst film ever, "Dressed To Kill"?

*spit take*
I'm OLDER than you? I was 22 when this came out!
Barely! I was 19 when it came out, so don't stress, old man! It's bad for your rusty ol' ticker!
I do need WD-40...
I use WD-40something 4 Men.
Well, you still have hair.
"Now I gotta Google “Is there a common name for blow-up sex dolls?” "
The things you do for us, Scott.
And I'm happy to make the sacrifice, although it leaves me with the unsettling suspicion that my life has become an eternal struggle between the Shell Answer Man and Rule 34.
